Cheti Chand marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year for Sindhi Hindus and falls on the first day of the Sindhi month of Chet (Chaitra) . It is celebrated on the second day of the Chaitra Shukla Paksha, which is the first moonlit night after the new moon, giving the festival its name: Chet (month) and Chand (moon) . The Legend of Jhulelal The day is most significant as it celebrates the birth anniversary of the Ishta Deva (patron saint) of the Sindhi community, Lord Jhulelal, also known as Uderolal . According to legend, in the 10th century, the Sindhi people were persecuted by a tyrannical ruler named Mirkshah. They prayed fervently to the Hindu God Varun Dev (the God of Water) on the banks of the River Indus for 40 days . Their prayers were answered with a divine prophecy that a child would be born to save them. This child, Uderolal, who later came to be known as Jhulelal, is considered an incarnation of Lord Varun. He is often depicted as an elderly man with a white beard sitting on a Pala fish, symbolizing his connection to the river . How is it Celebrated? The festival is a time of joy, community, and cultural pride. Key celebrations include: · Baharana Sahib: A key ritual involves preparing the Baharana Sahib, a sacred offering that includes a jyot (oil lamp), misiri (crystal sugar), cardamom, fruits, and Akha (a mixture of rice and sugar). This is carried in a procession to a nearby river or lake for immersion . · Processions & Fairs: Grand processions (Shobha Yatras) featuring Jhankis (tableaus) of Lord Jhulelal are taken out, accompanied by devotional singing, dancing (Chej), and a festive atmosphere . · Festive Feast: Traditional Sindhi delicacies like Dal Pakwan, Sai Bhaji, and Sindhi Kadhi are prepared and shared with family and friends .
